Marc von Martial’s focus is on people and sensual to moody portraits. Sensual melancholia is probably the best term to describe many of his works. Through artistic film photography, with a hint of alternative processes, experiments, hybrid and mixed media applications, he tries to transport intense moods. All this is broken up by the one or other urban project, where he tries to show the unusual in the usual.
Working on his people photography projects is more of a collaboration with his models and photo partners than a regular “stand here, do that” shooting. With easy moods during the sessions. These easy moods are also key for his commissioned portrait assignments.
For now a decade he educates young people in mostly analog creative photography techniques at a local school.
Cyanotypes & other alternative prints
For Marc von Martial taking the photo is only the first step in a long process of refining the image to an artwork that is printed on paper, mounted and ready to be presented in a fitting way. Taking the negative is the beginning in the vision of the final artwork.
The process of making Cyanotypes, Gum Prints and alcohol gel transfer, the look one can achieve with them, and the many ways of manipulating or toning are an ideal process for bringing his artworks to life. He loves the contemplating slowness of the processes, making him fully attached to the final piece of work.
Especially in these times of looking at hundreds of images each day, on glossy digital screens, sometimes so tiny you can’t even make out any detail, he finds it important to take the extra step and detach his vision from this fast and artwork guzzling online world. The haptic, the feel, the tones, the paper structure, colors and ultimately the presentation are not present on screen and yet are such an important piece of the life of an artwork.
